The Longwood War Memorial is a granite obelisk with the names inscribed on
the front. On the sides are plaques commemorating significant battles of the
First World War.
The memorial is located at the junction of Longwood Gate and Church Street.
140 names are commemorated as having lost their lives on this memorial, 9 of whom served in the Yorkshire Regiment.
Corporal Lloyd Beaumont. 11846. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Wright and Lucy Beaumont, of 35, Ruthven View, Harehills Lane, Leeds.
Killed 10 January 1917. Aged 24.
Born Huddersfield (Yorks), Enlisted Leeds.
Buried WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
Private Tom Beaumont. 29159. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed
23 April 1917.
Born Honley (Huddersfield), Enlisted Huddersfield , Resided Milnesbridge.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
Private Wilfred Steel Brook, 38417. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 5/36399 10th T R Battn. Killed on 25 June 1917.
Born Huddersfield, Enlisted Huddersfield.

Private Albert Hirst, 64593. 25th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland
Fusiliers, formerly 43936 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John William and
Emma Hirst, of 2, Hopkinson's Yard, Lockwood Rd., Huddersfield. Died at home
13 April 1918. Aged 19.
Born Huddersfield (Yorks), Enlisted Huddersfield (Yorks).
Buried HUDDERSFIELD (LOCKWOOD) CEMETERY.
(* A search for "A Hirst" of Huddersfield in Solders Died in the
Great War showed that the above was ikely. Lockwood and Longwood are not all
that far apart, distance-wise.)
Lance Corporal Thomas Beaumont Iredale. 28794. 7th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Sam Iredale, of 13, East St., Golcar, Huddersfield. Killed
14 May 1917. Aged 23.
Born Huddersfield, Enlisted Huddersfield, Resided Golcar (Near Huddersfield).

Private Albert Edward Lumb. 235584. 13th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly 3726 York Dragoons. Son of Mrs. Mary Ann Lumb, of 93, Prospect
Rd., Longwood, Huddersfield. Killed 23 November 1917.
Enlisted Harrogate, Resided Longwood (Huddersfield).
Commemorated on Panel 5, CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL.
Private Richmond Micklethwaite, 260106. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 31 July 1917.
Born Huddersfield, Enlisted Huddersfield.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
(Shown on memorial as "R Mickelthwaite". Correct spelling of name
is "Micklethwaite".)
Private Fred Parkinson. 4379665. 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Parkinson, of Huddersfield. Buried in Trimulgherry
Cantonment Cemetery. Died 14 March 1921. Aged 21.
Commemorated on Face 12 of the MADRAS 1914-1918 WAR MEMORIAL, CHENNAI.
Private Milton Whitehead, 29191. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead, of Milnsbridge, Huddersfield. Killed 28 September
1917. Aged 22.
Born Paddock (Huddersfield), Enlisted Huddersfield, Resided Milnesbridge.
Buried TYNE COT CEMETERY.
