The War Memorial for East Ham, London. The War Memorial for East Ham, London.

The East Ham War Memorial is located in Central Park, High Street South, East Ham.

The Memorial is a Cenotaph with a domed pediment supported by four pillars and enclosing a decorative pinnacle. Commemorative panels are on all four sides. The whole is mounted on a three stepped base. A bronze wreath is mounted between the two pillars at the front and rear faces.

1824 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial.

4 soldiers who served in ther Yorkshire Regiment are amongst those commemorated.


Private Dudley Bushell. 10449. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Annie Bushell, of 52, Ernald Avenue, East Ham, London. Killed 15 June 1915. Aged 20.
Born Kingston-on-Thames, Enlisted Stratford, Resided East Ham
Commemorated on Panel 12, LE TOURET MEMORIAL.

Private Walter Limmex. 8712. 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Died 6 February 1918..
Born Leytonstone (London), Enlisted Stratford (London), Resided East Ham.
Buried PESHAWAR (Right) B.C. XLIV. 21.
Commemorated on DELHI MEMORIAL (INDIA GATE).

2nd Lieutenant Frederick Thomas McBain. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. and Mrs. McBain, of 105, Caledon Rd., East Ham, London. Gained his commission on the field. Killed 9 April 1918. Aged 25.
Buried RATION FARM MILITARY CEMETERY.
The following comments are provided by Robert Couson in his Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Frederick McBain gained his commission in the field after service in the ranks of the Essex regiment and joined the 13th Yorkshires in late July 1917 in the Villers Guislains sector.
The following month he led a platoon in a daring raid involving pushing “Bangalore Torpedoes” under the enemy wire to explode and blow gaps to allow infantry access.
He fought at the Battle of Cambrai in November of 1917 and during the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 took part in ten days of action fighting on the retreat.
In April 1918 the battalion were involved during the Battle of the Lys and in actions between Lens and Armentieres 2nd Lt Frederick Thomas McBain was killed in action on April 9th 1918 aged 25."

Corporal Frederick Henry Ward. 6402. 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Frederick and Amelia Ward; husband of Matilda J. Ward, of 43, Lower Green, Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells. Served in the South African Campaign. Died at home 10 January 1918. Aged 35.
Born Hackney (London), Enlisted London, Resided East Ham.
Buried EAST HAM (St. MARY MAGDALENE) CHURCHYARD.
