The War Memorial, Lanchester (Co. Durham)

The War Memorial in Lanchester is located in a small park off Front Street, Lanchester. The memorial is a stone wall, with three dedicatory sections. The left hand panel commemorates those who lost their lives in the First World War. The centre panel carries the dedication. The right hand panel commemorates those who lost their lives in the Second World War and subsequent conflicts.

75 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War, 23 in the Second World War, and 2 in subsequent conflicts are commemorated on the memorial. A transcript of the names is given on the North EastWar Memorials Project website.

Private John Robert Bateman. 27292. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Matthew and Margaret Bateman, of High Langley, Burnhope, Durham. Killed 17 August 1916. Aged 19.
Born Old Shawbridge (Yorks), Enlisted Consett, Resided Langley (Co. Durham).
Commemorated on Panels 44 and 45, LOOS MEMORIAL.

Private Sidney Duke. 7446. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Mrs. E. Duke, of Gosport, Hants; husband of Lucy Sarah Perrin (formerly Duke), of Station Cottages, Steyning, Sussex. Killed 31 October 1914. Aged 29.
Born Dorchester, Enlisted Gosport.
Buried YPRES TOWN EXTENSION CEMETERY.

Private William Jarvis, 18693. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Robert and Ruth Jarvis. Killed 4 October 1917. Aged 20.
Born Lanchester (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Brandon Colliery (Durham).
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
