The Hoyland Nether War Memorial is currently located in the Hoyland Library. The Library is adjacent to the Hoyland Centre (as shown in the photo below).

The memorial is a framed Roll of Honour, - the frame being of carved wood. Over 1500 names are shown on the Roll of Honour, of whom approximately 10% lost their lives in the First World War. Those who lost their lives are shown by a cross against a name.

Eight men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated as having lost their lives on this memorial.

The memorial has been photographed in sections, and the photo of each section can be selected to provide a larger sized view which opens in another window, - the larger sized view enables the names to be read.


Corporal Robert Leach Beaumont, 40391. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 26021 York and Lancaster Regt. Son of William and Louisa Beaumont, of Law Foote, Hoyland Common, Barnsley. Killed 8 February 1917. Aged 20.
Born Hoyland (Yorks), Enlisted Hoyland (Nr Barnsley).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

2nd Lieutenant James Henry Fisher Clarke . 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 1 July 1916.
Buried DANTZIG ALLEY BRITISH CEMETERY.
The following biographical notes are provided by Robert Coulson in his Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"James Clarke was born in 1894 and was a scholar at Worksop College and King Edward VII school in Sheffield.
When he enlisted he was studying at Edinburgh University with a view to embarking on a career in medicine.
He arrived at Boulogne with the 7th Battalion on 14 July 1915 and was wounded in action at the end of the month whilst in the La Clytte area.
He served in the Ypres salient in late 1915, spending time in the Voormezeele area and Christmas Day of that year billeted in the ramparts of Ypres town.
Spring 1916 saw the battalion involved in the Actions of the Bluff just outside Ypres, and in June they moved down to the Somme.
On 1 July 1916 2nd Lt Clarke attacked with the battalion towards the village of Fricourt at 2-30 p.m. where “officers and men were literally mown down”. He was killed in this action at the age of 21."

Private Walter Guest. 53577. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 40655 West Riding Regt. Son of Mrs. Lucy Guest, of 12, Pepper St., Platts Common, Barnsley. Killed 25 October 1918. Aged 20.
Born Blacker Hill (Yorks), Enlisted Pontefract, Resided Hoyland (Barnsley).
Buried PREMONT BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Roland Duncan Harris, 33544. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 26646 York & Lancs Regt. Son of George F. and Mary Harris, of Hoyland Common, nr. Barnsley, Yorks. Killed 12 January 1917. Aged 20.
Enlisted Pontefract, Resided Hoyland Common.
Buried CONTAY BRITISH CEMETERY, CONTAY.

Private Robert Jones. 53561. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 40351 W Riding Regt. Son of Mrs. Beatrice Jones, of 16, Royston Hill, Hoyland, Barnsley, Yorks. Killed 6 November 1918. Aged 20.
Born Hoyland (Yorks), Enlisted Pontefract, Resided Hoyland.
Buried LE CATEAU MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Frederick Kay. 53582. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 40672 West Riding Regt. Born at Elsecar. Son of Joseph and Sarah Kay, of 21, Hadfield St., Wombwell, Barnsley. Killed 24 October 1918. Aged 23.
Born Hoyland (Yorks), Enlisted Hoyland. Resided Elsecar (Barnsley).
Buried LE CATEAU MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private John Burrow Powell. 44671. 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 60645 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 November 1918.
Born Working (Cumberland), Enlisted Hoyland (Yorks), Resided Milton.
Buried DOURLERS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private Charles Taylor. 25878. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Handel and Mary Ellen Taylor, of Oldham, Lancs. Killed 1 September 1916. Aged 22.
Born Oldham (Lancs), Enlisted Hoyland (Near Barnsley).
