The First World War Memorial in the Church of St. Mary, Heworth (Gateshead) is a triangular headed grey marble plaque, mounted on a red marble backboard. Two smaller tablets with additional names on them have been placed at the sides. The names commemorated are incised in black lettering.

249 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
6 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.

Private Edward Francis Burnham. 11039. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 22 August 1915.
Born Bill Quay (Durham), Enlisted Felling.
Commemorated on Panels 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Private George Cassy. 17981. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 28 September 1915.
Born Hebburn (Durham), Enlisted Jarrow, Resided Pelaw.
Commemorated on Panels 44 and 45, LOOS MEMORIAL.
(George Cassy's name is spelt as "Cassey" on the memorial. He is commemorated togther with his brother, William. The North East War Memorials Project website has provided biographical details on the two brothers.)

Private Robert Henry Dine. 42009. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 439 1st T R Battn. Son of Frank Thomas and the late Annie Dine, of 45, Heworth Avenue, Pelaw, Co. Durham. Died 7 June 1917. Aged 21.
Born Felling (Durham), Enlisted Felling, Resided Pelaw (Durham).
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Private Thomas Hush. 14064. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Annie Hush, of 39, Crowhall Lane, Felling-on-Tyne. Killed 15 July 1916. Aged 25.
Born Felling (Gateshead), Enlisted Deaf Hill, Resided Felling.
Buried HEILLY STATION CEMETERY.

Private George Plews. 202958. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Allan and Armie Plews, of 64, Reservoir St., Wardley, Pelaw, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Killed 23 April 1917. Aged 20.
Born Langley Park (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Pelaw-on-Tyne (Newcastle).
Commemorated Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private Edward Nesbitt Staward. 48033. 13th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Harriett Stevens, of Dockham Rd., Cinderford, Glos. Killed 1 October 1918. Aged 24.
Born Durham, Enlisted Gateshead.

(In the 1911 census Edward Nesbitt Staward was living at 20 York St, Pelaw on Tyne. Head of the household was Ann Staward aged 59. Grandmother?)
