The Hesleden War Memorial The Hesleden War Memorial

The Hesleden War Memorial is located on Hesleden Road, outside the cemetery. The memorial was unveiled for the first time in October 2017.

The memorial is a pillar of stone from he Staindrop Quarries, surmounted by a Latin cross. The total height is 3 metres to the top of the cross. The whole stands on a paved base. On the front of the pillar is a panel of black granite which bears the names in two columns in Roman upper case lettering.

42 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World war, and 9 in the SecondWorld War. A transcription of the names is on the Imperial war Museum's Register of War Memorials website.

One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.


Private James Studham, 16248. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 October 1916.
Born Pelton Fell, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Castle Eden.
