The War Memorial in Helperby

The Helperby War Memorial carries the names of men from the parish who lost their lives in both World Wars. The names of the fallen are on a brass plate. The inscription and names are as below;-

A 1918 edition of the "Easingwold Advertiser" included an article on the Leverington family from Helperby, five of whose sons fought in the First World War. One son (serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment) was killed and another son (serving with the Yorkshire Regiment) was wounded. Select the link below to read this article.

(Shown on the Helperby Memorial as being in the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Rather confusngly there was another John Kirk in the 6th Battalion who is
commmeorated on the Brignall memorial).

Regiment. Son of John and Hannah Kirk, of Helperby, York. Died of wounds 12
December 1915. Aged 24.

Regiment. Son of George Richardson, of Canby Row, Helperby, York, and the
late Minnie Richardson.
Died 5 May 1915. Aged 22.
Born Layerthorpe (York), Enlisted Helperby (Yorks).
Buried ETRETAT CHURCHYARD
Private Richardson is called "Frankland Richardson" in SDGW and
on the Helperby Memorial, but "Frank Richardson" in the CWGC Register.
