The
Location of Hebburn Colliery, Tyneside (1:50 OS Map)
The Hebburn Colliery Board School was demolished in 1963.
In the First World War, 2282 men from Hebburn Colliery served in the Armed
Forces. Of these 410 had been educated at the Hebburn Colliery Board School
(ref :
North East War Memorials Project). Of the past pupils of the school, 34
lost their lives in the war.
The names of the past pupils of the school who lost their lives were commemorated
on a memorial which hung in the school. This memorial was a plaque, where
the commemorated names were in four columns.
Unfortunately, this plaque has now been lost, and the names of those commemorated
are taken from a newspaper of the time and are shown on a website for the
Hebburn
and Jarrow Roll of Honour.
