The War Memorial for Greatham (Hartlepool) is a Celtic style wheel cross of granite, on tapering shaft and plinth. A sword is raised in half relief at the front. The memorial stands on a platform approached by five steps near to the main entrance to the churchyard of Greatham's parish church, - the Church of St. John the Baptist.

13 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 13 in the Second World War.

2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the Greatham War Memorial.


Lieutenant Rowland Telford Casebourne. 3rd Battalion attached attd. (Adjt.) 5th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). Son of the late Charles Townsend Casebourne and Eliza Jane Casebourne, of Greatham House, Greatham, Co. Durham; husband of Eva Gertrude Casebourne, of Hartburn, Stockton-on-Tees. Served in the South African Campaign. Killed 2 July 1916. Aged 39.
Resided West Hartlepool.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
The following biographical notes are from Robert Coulson's Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"An older soldier Rowland Casebourne had seen service during the Boer War.
He was with the 3rd Reserve Battalion of the Yorkshires mainly engaged in training of drafts for the front and coastal defence of the North East coast of England.
Due to his experience however he was posted to France and attached to the 5th Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment.
He was with them in July 1916 when the Somme offensive began and was killed in action on July 2nd 1916 as the West Yorks fought at the Schwaben Redoubt, he was 39 years old."

Lance Corporal Ralph Watson. 17684. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Miss Florence Watson, of Front St., Greatham, Stockton-on-Tees. Killed 10 July 1916.
Born Greatham (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Greatham.
