In the First World War, a large number of men from the various
railway companies left to join the Armed Services.
The Great Western Railway Company produced a Roll of Honour at the end of
the war, on which are shown the names of members of the staff of the Great
Western Railway Company who gave their lives in the Great War.
Several copies of this Roll of Honour were printed and were
displayed in stations of the Great Western Railway. The Roll of Honour displayed
in Chester Railway Station is shown on Carlscam
website, and has been transcribed on that website.
A similar Roll of Honour, originally located in Exeter (St. David's) Railway
Station, but now displayed in the National Railway Museum in
York is shown below.
The number of Great Western men who joined His Majesty's Forces was 25,479,
representing thirty-three per cent of the Company's staff. Those who gave
their lives in the war numbered 2,524.
At least 4 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment and who lost their
lives in the war had previously served the Great Western Railway Company.
The Great Western Railway War Memorial, situated halfway along Platform 1 at London Paddington Station, is a monument to the memory of employees of the Great Western Railway who died during the First World War. A sealed casket was placed Inside the plinth. This was made at the GWR's Swindon Works and contained a vellum roll commemorating the names of those who died (However, a plaque on the memorial commemorates 3312 men and women of the GWR....).
