The Gateshead Cenotaph

East War Memorials Project
The War Memorial for Gateshead is a cenotaph, located on the Durham Road
(A167) at the junction with Prince Consort Road. The cenotaph is opposite
St. George's Church.
The cenotaph was designed to include an inner chamber, accessed through a
bronze door (originally made of teak), in which was held a Roll of Honour
Book. This book has since been removed to the safe keeping of the Gateshead
Library, where it may only be viewed by special request.
The Roll of Honour Book has approximately 100 parchment pages, in which the
names of those who lost their lives in the First World War have been hand-written
in script.
Some 1,557 names are commemorated in this book. The names are shown by Regiment,
Name, Rank, and Number.
The North
East War Memorials Project has provided a transcription of these names,
together with photos of the individual pages of the Roll of Honour Book.

Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has researched the background to the military and ancestral records of " "Matthew Routh" / "Matthew Casey";-
Cpl 19627 Matthew James Routh is shown as Cpl 19627 Matthew
Casey in all “official” military records but is described
by the CWGC as the son of John Robert & Isabella ROUTH. The record says
he died in 1915 aged 29 which means he was born about 1886.
In the Gateshead,
Durham, England, War Honours Scrapbook, 1914-1920 he is shown as Private
M Routh.
He is known as Cpl 19627 Matthew Casey in all “official” military records but is described by the CWGC as the son of John Robert & Isabella ROUTH. The record says he died in 1915 aged 29 which means he was born about 1886.
The 1891 Census has a Matthew Routh born about 1886 living with his grandparents along with his parents John Robert & Isabella Routh. Free BMD lists Matthew James Routh born in the Dec Qtr 1886 in the Gateshead RD. He is not living with his parents in the 1901 Census but can be found as an inmate in the Roll of the North Eastern Reformatory for Boys at Netherton. I can’t find him in the 1911 Census although John Robert & Isabella Routh can be found. The Register for Soldiers’ Effects for Cpl 19627 Matthew Casey mentions his mother Isabella Routh and sister Polly Routh. Polly is a nickname for Mary and the 1911 Census shows that John Robert & Isabella Routh did have a daughter named Mary.
There can be little doubt that Cpl 19627 Matthew James Routh and Cpl 19627 Matthew Casey are one and the same man, and "Matthew Casey” was an alias. I wonder whether as a result of his “difficult” time as a youth he felt the need to adopt a new identity when enlisting including falsely declaring that he was born in Dublin (even the Irish were taken in listing him, I believe wrongly, in their 1923 Memorial Records) and only after his death was his true family name used in “unofficial” records.
