The War Memorial in the Baptist Church, Esh Winning, is a plaque
of classic surround with plain panel. The dedication starts in the top border.
The names are listed in two columns, with the dedication carrying on below.
The lettering is in Roman script. There are two cylindrical flower vases on
either side, each with a wreath raised in half relief on the front.
The memorial is constructed with a white marble plaque and a marble surround.
24 names from the First World War are commemorated on the memorial.
2 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.
Lance Corporal John Frederick Bate, 18103. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Joseph Bate, of 8, Whitwell Street, Waterhouses, Durham,
and the late Jane Bate. Killed 8 May 1918. Aged 21.
Born Waterhouses (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Waterhouses.

is a village close by Esh Winning.)
Private Arthur Dodds, 34189. 8th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment,
formerly 20479 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Dodds, of 17,
Albert Terrace, Esh Winning, Co. Durham. Killed 30 September 1916. Aged 21.
Born Brandon (Durham), Enlisted Durham.
Commemorated Pier and Face 14 A and 14 B, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
