St. Philip's Church, Elswick (Newcastle upon Tyne) is now the Deeper Life Bible Church. However, the Frst World War Memorial installed in St. Philip's Church is currently still located in the same building.
The memorial consists of 16 panels divided into two groups of eight, each group comprised of two rows of four. The panels are of wood and the commemorations are in gilded paint in upper case.
222 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
4 of the names are those of soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment, though there is an element of uncertainty with at least two of the names.
Private Joseph Brydon. 34794. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 73509 D L I. Son of Caroline Brydon, of 55, Worley St., Newcastle-on-Tyne,
and the late George Brydon. Killed 27 May 1918. Aged 19.
Born Newcastle-on-Tyne, Enlisted Newcastle.
Commemorated on the SOISSONS MEMORIAL
(Worley Street is just to the North of St. Phillip's Church.
There was a Joseph Henry Brydon, 34661, of the 1st/7th Duke of Wellington's
(West Riding Regiment). Son of Joseph Henry Septimus Brydon and Elizabeth
Brydon, of 48, Isabella St., Elswick, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Killed 11 October
1918.
Either of these names, though, could be the ones on ther memorial.
Worley Street is closer to the church than Isabella Street.)
* A Joseph Bryden is commemorated on the Elswick Wesey Hall Methodist Church.
No Joseph "Bryden" is shown in Soldiers Died in the Great war, but
it seems curious that the above Joseph Brydon would also be on this Methodist
Memorial.
Private William Graham. 38581. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 36280 West Yorks Regt. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Graham,
of Gateshead; husband of Florence Graham, of 228, Jefferson St., Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Killed 13 May 1917. Aged 37.
Born Jarrow, Enlisted Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
(Jefferson Srteet no longer exists. However, from "Retail
Memories...." it was located near to Leazes Park. This is not far
from St. Phillip's Church.)
Private George Hutchinson. 33556. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Formerly 29839 Northumberland Fusiliers. Son of Edward and Mary Ann Hutchinson,
of 1, Bell St., Newcastle-on-Tyne. Killed 31 July 1917. Aged 27.
Born Westgate (Newcastle), Enlisted Newcastle.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
(George Hutchinson is commemorated on a family headstone in St. Nicholas Cemetery,
Newcastle upon Tyne. This cemetery is close to St. Phillip's Church. Westgate,
where he was born, is close to St. Phillip's Church.)

Regiment. Killed 14 November 1915.
