The Elland War Memorial is located at the entrance to Hullen
Edge Park, off Hullenedge Road.
The memorial is a helmeted soldier in greatcoat standing in contemplative
pose resting on rifle which is held in front of him with the butt on the ground.
Figure surmounts square granite pedestal and three stepped stone base. The
commemorations are in incised lettering on panels round the sides of the memorial
(First World War) and at the base of the front (Second World War).
177 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 72 in the Second World War.
4 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.
Lance Corporal Henry Berry, 33507. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Formerly 32086 11th Res. Hussars Regt. Killed 22 September 1917.
Born Elland (Yorks), Enlisted Halifax, Resided Elland.
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Private Hall Broomhead. 35627. 10th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire
Light Infantry, formerly 29045 Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Mr. F. Broomhead,
of New Hall Cottages, Elland, Yorks. Killed 25 April 1917. Aged 38.
Born Elland (Yorks), Enlisted Elland.
Commemorated on Bay 7, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
Private John Lindley. 7719. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Alfred Lindley, of 12, Airley Top, Huddersfield. Died at
home 14 August 1914. Aged 30.
Born Elland (Halifax), Enlisted Halifax, Resided Ainley Top (Near Lindley
- Huddersfield).
Buried FORT GEORGE MILITARY CEMETERY, GUERNSEY (C. I.)
( A newspaper article reproduced on the website "The
Channel Islands and the Great War" stated that Private Lindley
was found drowned in the Albert Dock, Guernsey. He had apparently fallen into
the harbour at low tide, at 5.30 in the morning, and had hit his head on rocks
in the harbour bottom. The fall height was about 25 ft.)
Private Horatio Rawnsley. 40428. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Formerly 31505 11th Res Cavalry Regt. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Gledhill Rawnsley,
of 9, Cross Hill, Greetland, Halifax; husband of Mrs. A. Nutton (formerly
Rawnsley), of 84, Langdale St., Elland, Yorks. Killed 7 June 1917. Aged 25.
Born Greetland, Enlisted Elland, Resided Greetland (Yorks).
