The War Memorial for the Alumni of University College Edinburgh
is located in the Old College on the Western side of the quadrangle (inside
the centre archway above stairs).
Over 1000 names are commemorated on this memorial.
Three Officers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.
Captain William Brownlie, MC. Royal Army Medical Corps,
attached to 13th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of John D. Brownlie,
of 117, Wool Exchange, London, E.C.2. Killed 25 March 1918. Aged 36.
Buried HENINEL-CROISILLES ROAD CEMETERY.
William Brownlie is commemorated in the Edinburgh
University Roll of Honour, from which the photo on the left and the following
information is obtained;-
Born 1881. High School, Invercargill (NZ). MA, BSc (NZ). Student of Medicine
1911 - 1916. MB Ch.B 1915 RAMC attached 13th Yorks. Captain Jan 1917. MC (posthumous)
for gallantry near Cambrai Nov 1917.

The following was recorded in the 13th Battalion's War Diary regarding the
death of Captain Brownlie;-
"The feature of the day was the excellent shooting by our own Artillery
on our own lines. The ERVILIERS - ST. LEGER Road, or Support Line, was shelled
most persistently and accurately, heavy casualties being caused. Despite numerous
messages this continued throughout the whole day. Captain Brownlie, RAMC,
the Battalion MO was killed by our own shelling some 300 yards behind our
line and 1000 yards from the enemy."
Captain John Earnscleugh Brydon. Royal Army Medical
Corps, attached to 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Helen C.
Brydon, of 5, Cobden Crescent, Edinburgh. Killed on 27 June 1917.
Aged 33.

A
photograph of Captain Brydon is contained in the University's Roll of
the Fallen. From this document, a brief biography shows that;-
He was born in Darlington and educated at Richmond School. He was a student
at the University from 1903 - 1908, being awarded an M B and Ch.B in 1908.
He was comissioned Captain in January 1914, and was attached to the Northumbrian
Division, Ammunition Column. He was gassed on 27 June 1917.

2nd Lieutenant James Henry Fisher Clarke. 7th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Died 1 July 1916.
Buried DANTZIG ALLEY BRITISH CEMETERY.
The following biographical notes are provided by Robert Coulson in his Biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"James Clarke was born in 1894 and was a scholar at Worksop College and
King Edward VII school in Sheffield.
When he enlisted he was studying at Edinburgh University with a view to embarking
on a career in medicine.
He arrived at Boulogne with the 7th Battalion on 14 July 1915 and was wounded
in action at the end of the month whilst in the La Clytte area.
He served in the Ypres salient in late 1915, spending time in the Voormezeele
area and Christmas Day of that year billeted in the ramparts of Ypres town.
Spring 1916 saw the battalion involved in the Actions of the Bluff just outside
Ypres, and in June they moved down to the Somme.
On 1 July 1916 2nd Lt Clarke attacked with the battalion towards the village
of Fricourt at 2-30 p.m. where “officers and men were literally mown
down”. He was killed in this action at the age of 21."

details of Lieutenant Clarke are contained in the University's Roll of
the Fallen;-
He was educated at King Edward VII School, Sheffield, 1908 -1913, where he
was in the OTC. He was in the Edinburgh University OTC October - December
1914. 2nd Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Regiment January 1915. Wounded in August
1915.
