The War Memorial for Eccleshill is located at the Eccleshill Recreation Ground, Stonehall Road, Eccleshill (Bradford).

The memorial incorporates a figure of Peace in robes and a cloak, holding out a Laurel wreath in her right hand. The memorial is on a square pedestal with flanking walls bearing the commemorative panels. There are four First World War commemorative panels, and below them four smaller panels commemorating those who lost their lives in the Second World War.

139 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 79 in the Second World War.

5 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial for Eccleshill (Bradford).


Private Willie Bell. 33749. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 308344 RASC. Son of Tom and Hannah Bell; husband of Lily Bell, of 599, Killinghall Rd., Bradford. Died 9 April 1918.
Born Bradford, Enlisted Bradford.
Commemorated on Panel 4, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.

Private Sam Charlesworth. 9235. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 29 September 1916.
Born Bradford, Enlisted Bradford.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Company Serjeant Major Joseph McEvoy, 6926. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Anne Mary McEvoy, of 59, Fagley Rd., Bradford. Died 27 September 1917. Aged 38.
Born Bowling (Bradford), Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Bradford.
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 & 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

George William Frith served as Serjeant James Smith (Alias), DCM. 201736.
1st/5th Battalion Manchester Regiment, formerly 25581 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary Ann Frith, of 15, Morning Side, Heaton Rd., Manningham, Bradford; husband of Alice Frith, of 14, Bromet Place, Eccleshill, Bradford. Killed 15 August 1918. Aged 30.
Born Bradford (Yorks), Enlisted Richmond (Yorks).
Buried BAGNEUX BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Ernest Wood. 9625. 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.Son of John William and Alice J Wood, of 5, Haigh Farm, Moorside Rd., Eccleshill, Bradford. Died 26 October 1919. Aged 34.
Buried PESHAWAR (Right) B.C.XLV. 71.
Commemorated on the DELHI MEMORIAL GATE.

Enlarging the above image enables the commemorated names to be almost legible. However, all names are listed on the Imperial War Museum's War Memorial Register.

Of interest is that the memorial was vandalised in 2006 and the commemorative panels were ripped off.
This act of vandalism is reported in Bradford's Telegraph and Argus.
The panels were subsequently replaced (though no further information on this).
