The First World War Memorial in St. Michael's Church, Byker is a series oak panels located in the Sanctuary.

The commemorated names are listed in a single column on each vertical panel, sometimes with spaces between names, mainly using a panel for each letter of the alphabet The lettering is handpainted in gilt. The dedication, which runs right along the top round all three sides, is in elaborate lower case. The names are in Roman capitals with shading.

317 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War. A transcription of the names commemorated is provided on the North East War Memorials Project website.

6 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Private James Marshall Armstrong, 50808. 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment, formerly 45083 Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. M. Patterson, of 31, Mozart St., South Shields. Killed 2 October 1918.
Born Blackill (Durham), Enlisted South Shields (Durham).
Buried JONCOURT EAST BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Robert Brown. 11632. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. E. Brown, of III, Thornborough St., Byker, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Killed 11 July 1916. Aged 30.
Born Whitby, Enlisted Whitby, Resided Newcastle.
Buried in A.I.I> BURIAL GROUND, FLERS.

Private Robert Carr Jessop. 245290. 10th Battalion the Durham Light Infantry, formerly 204326 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 16 October 1917.
Born Newcastle, Enlisted Newcastle.
Commemorated Panel 128 to 131 and 162 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Private John Malia. 202171. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 7 November 1917.
Born Northumberland, Enlisted Newcastle.
Commemorated Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
(The 1911 Census showed John Malia to be living with his wife, Mary Ann, and 2 daughters in Stepney Bank, Byker. He was aged 33 in the Census.)

Private John William Walker. 204735. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 4 October 1917. Son of the late William and Elizabeth Walker, (nee Morrison), of Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; husband of Mary Walker, of 26 Hawick Crescent, Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Born Middlesbrough, Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided North Ormesby.
