The Butterknowle War Memorial is an obelisk and is located to the north of Pinfold Lane, the main street running through the village. The memorial commemorates 23 men who lost their lives in the First World War.
The names of those who are commemorated, together with photographs of the dedication and commemorative panels on the memorial, can be found on the website for the Fallen Service Men of South West County Durham.This website has generously allowed use of information contained on the website.
3 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.
Private Fred Atkinson, 204650. 10th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 4 October 1917.
Born Shildon (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Butterknowle.
Commemorated on Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Private John Bell, 7979. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed on 29 October 1914.
Born Middleton Tyas, Enlisted Richmond, Resided Butterknowle.
Commemorated Panel 33, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
(Although the memorial shows "J J Bell", a search of the records
shows the above John Bell to be a likely candidate for the Butterknowle War
Memorial.)
Private Bertie Robinson, 18858. 9th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Adopted son of Mr. C. Smith, of 39, Chapel Houses, Copley Lane,
Butter Knowle, Co. Durham. Killed on 4 October 1916. Aged 23.
Born Lynesack (Durham), Enlisted Barnard Castle, Resided Butterknowle.
Buried BECOURT MILITARY CEMETERY.
