Of the 50,000 Jews who served with the British and Colonial Forces during the First World War, 2,324 lost their lives and are commemorated in the book "British Jewry Book of Honour".

Private Harold David Aarons, 43067. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Lewis and Katie Aarons, of 30, Canonbury Park South, London. Killed
10 October 1917. Aged 18.
Born Southwark, Enlisted London, Resided Islington, N.

2nd Lieutenant Robert Bernard Abrahams. 4th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Lewis and Millie Abrahams, of 6, Stafford House, Maida Hill,
London. Killed 14 September 1916. Aged 24.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Lieutenant Abrahams was one of 13 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment
who are commemorated in the British Jewry Book of Honour. Of the 50,000 Jews
who served with the British and Colonial Forces during the First World War,
2,324 lost their lives and are commemorated in this book.)
The following comments are provided by Robert Couson in his Biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"A solicitor before the war, Robert Abrahams worked for Roberts, Abrahams
and Co in London.
He joined the London University Officer Training Corps in July of 1915 and
was commissioned with the 4th Battalion in September 1915.
Robert Abrahams lost his life during the Battle of the Somme in the summer
of 1916.
In late August and early September the 4th Battalion were involved in training
exercises in the Millencourt area. On September 10th they were called into
brigade support at Shelter Wood and on the evening of September 14th the battalion
moved up into their assembly positions in Eye and Swansea trenches for an
attack the following day.
They had to move up over open ground as the communication trenches were so
crowded. The Germans opened fire on the battalion and caused some forty casualties.
2nd Lt Robert Bernard Abrahams was killed in this action on September 14th
1916 aged 24."

Lieutenant Henry Bloom. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died
14 February 1917.
Buried GUARDS' CEMETERY, COMBLES.
(Henry Bloom lived in "The Crescent", Linthorpe, Middlesbrough.
He was born in 1889, in Stockton-on-Tees, and was a Solicitor's Clerk.)

Killed 12 March 1915.
Born Cardiff, Enlisted Stratford, Resided London.

(Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, formerly 26598 the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 23 October 1917.
Born Leeds, Enlisted Richmond (Yorks).

Private Hyman Davies, 235221. 19th Battalion The King's (Liverpool
Regiment), formerly 5884 the Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Annie
Davies, of 39, Birch St., Hightown, Manchester. Killed 1 August 1917. Aged
37.

1918. Aged 37.

Killed 20 July 1916. Aged 21.

Levy. Born at Sunderland. Died 6 November 1918. Aged 21.

Died 7 December 1915. Aged 23.

Died 18 March 1919. Aged 39.
Buried EAST HAM (MARLOW ROAD) JEWISH CEMETERY.
(Additional information. From his Pension Record;- Enlisted 31 May 1916. Served
in France 30 July 1917 - 9 November 1917. Discharged into an asylum 1 July
1918 as permanently mentally ill, the result of combat stress. Died of choking.
Commemorated in the British Jewry Book of Honour as "J Reece", though
correct regimental number.)

2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Abraham and Kate Rosen, of 84,
Mulberry St., Commercial Rd., London, E.I. Born Kalisch, Poland. Killed 2
November 1914. Aged 19.

Private Abraham Samuels. 35666. 10th
Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, formerly 25708 the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Samuel and Bertha Samuels, of Leeds. Killed 24 October 1917.
Aged 23.
Born Leeds, Enlisted Leeds.
Buried LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.
(Name = "Abey Samuel" in SDGW; number on headstone appears to be
"33666.")
