The War Memorial for Bridgwater is located in the middle of
King Square, on the site formerly occupied by Bridgwater Castle.
The sculpture depicts a seated mother and her children. In her hand she holds
the world and in her lap the Book of Law. The depiction is intended to represent
civilisation.
The memorial commemorates the names of 364 men who fell in the First World War and 113 men who fell in the Second World War. The memorial also commemorates 3 men who died in subsequent conflicts.
One Yorkshire Regiment soldier from Bridgwater is commemorated on the memorial.
We are extremely grateful to Miles Peterson of the Bridgwater Heritage Group for a photo of the plaque on which the Yorkshire Regiment soldier is commmeorated.
