The Bolton Cenotaph in Victoria Square, Bolton, was unveiled in front of Bolton Town Hall in 1928. Originally commemorating the people of Bolton lost during the First World War, further inscriptions were added after the Second World War. However, the names of those who lost their lives in the First World War are not commemorated on the Cenotaph, but are in a Book of Remembrance held in the Hall of Memory inside the Town Hall. This book is an illuminated manuscript designed by Tillotsons (Bolton) Ltd and contains the names of Bolton servicemen and civilian casualties of the First World War.

Over 3,500 names are listed alphabetically in surname order by regiment and battalion and the regimental crest is depicted for each regiment. The names of Bolton men appear in 120 regiments, representing nearly every unit of the fighting forces of Great Britain and the Dominions. There are also Bolton men recorded as having fought in the forces of the United States of America, France and Belgium.

Eight women and girls are amongst the thirteen civilian casualties who lost their lives in the zeppelin raid of 25th September 1916.

The Roll of Honour is on display in the Hall of Remembrance on the ground floor of Bolton Town Hall. The volume has also been scanned and is available on the website of the Bolton Library and Museum Services. The photos from the bolton Roll of Honour, below, are taken from this website.
