The War Memorial for Blackpool is situated on the Central Promenade by the Metropole Hotel.

The memorial is a granite obelisk on three-stepped plinth and set of square steps located on the seafront. Each side of the plinth has large bronze reliefs depicting allegories of Victory, Grief and Justice. There are also four smaller reliefs of servicemen.

Alongside the main obelisk are two freestanding chest tombs with covers of cast bronze listing the names of those who lost their lives in the First World War. Each side of these chest tombs has 16 panels, so that here are 64 namespanels in total
The Second World War commemorations are on 18 panels below the east face of the cenotaph.

909 names are commmeorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
The names of those commemorated have been transcribed on the Lost Ancestors website, and on the Roll of Honour website. Additionally, the Roll of Honour website provides brief biographical details.

6 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Sapper Thomas Carney. 216506. 92nd Field Company, Royal Engineers. Formerly 12th Battalion (Pioneers), Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. J and Mrs. Martha Carney, of 29, Lewtas St., North Shore, Blackpool. Native of Southport. Died of wounds 22 August 1918. Aged 23.
Born Heywood (Lancs), Enlisted Blackpool, Resided Heysham (Lancs).
Buried RIBEMONT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, SOMME.

Private George Francis Everett. 39339. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Sarah Everett, of Manchester; husband of Maud Rose (formerly Everett), of 80, Newcastle Avenue, Blackpool. Killed 16 June 1917. Aged 34.
Born Manchester, Enlisted Blackpool.

Private Wilfred Sinclair Gregory. 235304. 20th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment), formerly 242586 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Henry Gregory, of "Glenville," St. Stephen's Avenue, Whitegate Drive, Blackpool. Killed 3 August 1917. Aged 26.
Born Waterfoot (Lancs), Enlisted Lancaster, Resided Blackpool.
Buried MENDINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Cyril Harding. 235055. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Hugh Lovatt Cecil and Ada Harding, of 8, Clarence Rd., Moseley, Birmingham; husband of Maggie Harding, of 247, Central Drive, Blackpool. Killed 23 April 1917. Aged 36.
Born Silverdale (Bristol), Enlisted Lancaster, Resided Ravensthorpe (Yorks).
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private Samuel Ewart Selby. 123140. 6th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 243736 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Selby, of "Glenburn,'' Arundel Avenue, Bispham, Blackpool. Killed 23 July 1918. Aged 28.
Born Manchester, Enlisted Manchester.
Buried VALENCIENNES (ST. ROCH) COMMUNAL CEMETERY.

Private Robert Stafford. 235250. 18th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment), formerly 202700 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Pathane and the late John Henry Stafford; husband of Mrs. H. A. Stafford, of 14, Heap St., Colne Rd., Burnley. Killed 31 July 1917. Aged 30.
Born Shaw (Lancs), Enlisted Burnley (Lancs), Resided Blackpool.
