The First World War Memorial for St. Andrew's Church, Bishop Auckland

The War Memorial in St. Andrew's churchyard, Bishop Auckland, is located just inside the Lych Gate off Church Road. This some distance from the Church itself, and the main entrance to the Church.
The memorial is a tall Saxon-style Cross, of Darley Dale stone, the tapering shaft of which is carved in half relief with a vine scroll; the head of the cross has boss and armpits, and roll-ended arms. The shaft of the cross stands on a rectangular three-stepped pedestal, which sits on a low-kerbed four-sided base. The pedestal is inscribed in Sans Serif capitals on all four sides. Its upper tier bears the dedicatory inscription; the middle and lower tiers bear the commemorations.
305 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War. The faces on the memorial with the individual commemorations are shown below.

Son of Elizabeth Airey, of 56, North Bondgate, Bishop Auckland, and the late
John Airey. Killed 8 May 1918. Aged 29.

Private Alfred Addison Bainbridge. 265928. 4th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Robert Bainbridge, of 3, Fleet St., Bishop Auckland, Co.
Durham, and the late Elizabeth Bainbridge. Died 27 May 1918. Aged 36.
Born Wear Valley Junction - Durham, Enlisted Middlesbrough.

Son of John and Annie Brown; husband of Ethel Brown, of 16, Thomas St., Auckland

Private Wilfred Donnell. 48458. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Donnell, of 3, Dennison's Yard, North Bondgate, Bishop
Auckland. Killed 27 May 1918. Aged 19.

Lance Corporal Francis Hedley, 17872. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Robert and Jane Hedley, of 20, West View, Tinsdale Crescent,
Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Killed 13 May 1917. Aged 22.

Private Francis William Hughes, 16776. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 10 August 1916.

Private William Ernest Jackson, 3280. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Sarah Jackson, of 54, High St., Loftus, Yorks. Killed 16 September
1916. Aged 23.

2nd Lieutenant William Lowther. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of William Foster Lowther and Margaret Lowther, of Copley House, Butterknowle,
Co. Durham; husband of Nora Mary Nicholson (formerly Lowther), of 2, High
Tenters St., Bishop Auckland. Killed 27 May 1918. Aged 26.

The following notes are by Robert Coulson in his biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
A County Durham man, William Lowther was serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with
the 5th Battalion, when in early May 1918 they were posted to a so called
“quiet sector” on the ridge of the Chemin des Dames.
On May 27th the battalion held a frontage of around two thousand yards on
the Craonne Plateau when at 1-00 a.m. “A wholly unexpected German attack”
was launched against the battalion.
To the right and left ground was ceded to the German infantry leaving 2nd
Lieutenant Lowther and the 5th Battalion almost surrounded. In this action
battalion losses were severe especially in men missing and captured.
2ndLieutenant William Lowther was killed in this action on May 27th 1918 at
the age of 26.
He was the son of William Foster Lowther and Margaret Lowther of Copley House,
Butterknowle, in County Durham.
Lance Corporal Frederick Peverell. 34494. 9th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 9 October 1918.
Born South Church (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided South Church.

Lance Corporal Frederick Peverell is also commemorated on the
Memorial to the Durham and Newcastle Association of Change Ringers which
is situated in Newcastle Cathedral.
Private John Peverell. 18163. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed 6 November 1918.
Born Southchurch (Durham), Enlisted Darlington, Resided Southchurch.
Buried CAMBRAI EAST MILITARY CEMETERY.

8 February 1917.
