The Birkenhead Cenotaph is located in Hamilton Square Gardens, Birkenhead.
The Cenotaph commemorates 1455 dead of the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War are commemorated in the nearby Wirral Museum.

The names of those commemorated on the Cenotaph have been transcribed on Carl's Cam website. Amongst the names are 5 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

Private Harry Brown. 18504. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 6 December 1915.
Born Wetherby, Enlisted Darlington.
Buried HILL 10 CEMETERY.
(Although at first sight not obviously connected to Birkenhead, according to his Pension Record the widow of this Yorks Regt., soldier lived in Birkenhead.)

Private John Clarke, 34160. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late John Edward Clarke, of Leeds; husband of Sarah A. Clarke, of 102, Bridge St., Birkenhead. Killed 21 October 1917. Aged 23.
Born Leeds, Enlisted Birkenhead.
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 & 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Private James Dodd. 7858. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Sarah Dodd of Back Brook St, Chester, husband of Kate Dodd, of 41, Park Rd, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Died 1 July 1916. Aged 41.
Born Ashton (Chester), Enlisted Birkenhead, Resided Little Sutton (Cheshire).
Buried DANTZIG ALLEY BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Albert Smith. 205032. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Sarah Rachel Smith, of 41, Pearson Rd., Birkenhead. Died 27 May 1918. Aged 37.
Born Liverpool, Enlisted Middlesbrough.
Commemorated SOISSONS MEMORIAL.

Lieutenant George Mellor Wolstenholme, MC. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard Mellor Wolstenholme, of South Hill Grove, Oxton, Birkenhead. Killed 5 October 1918. Aged 21.
Buried BUSIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
