The Woking War Memorial in the Town Square, Woking

"Magicfingers" has taken a large number of photos of the Woking War Memorial, and we are very grateful for permission to use these photos. The photos included views of all the commemorations on this memorial.
552 names are commemorated on the memorial for men who lost their lives in the First World War. Among these names are four soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Private William Bayes. 30017. 13th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 32885 Notts & Derby Regt. Killed 9 October 1916.
Born Gainsborough (Lincs), Enlisted Gainsborough.
Buried PHILOSOPHE BRITISH CEMETERY.
(William Bayes was the son of Edward and Annie Bayes. On 3 June 1916 he married
Esther Daniels, a widow aged 30, in Christ Church, Woking. At the time he
was stationed at Inkerman Barracks in Woking, with the 13th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment.)
Private Henry Bothwell. 64333. 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of John William and Margaret Bothwell, of Woking. Died at home 14 February
1919. Aged 19.
Born Woking.
Buried BROOKWOOD CEMETERY.
(Additional information : He worked as a Lad Porter from 17/8/1914 with the
L&SW Rlwy then the L B &SC Rlwy until 11/5/1916 when he joined the

2nd Lieutenant George Edwin Chapman. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Ebenezer and Clara Emma Chapman, of The Cottage, Ivy Lane,
Woking, Surrey. Gold and Silver Medallist (Chemistry) University College,
London; Goldsmid and Ellen Watson Scholar, University College; Mathematical
Scholar, University of London. Killed 27 September 1916. Aged 20.
Buried GROVE TOWN CEMETERY, MEAULTE.
Lieutenant Richard Herbert Phayre. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Eldest son of Lt. Col. R. Phayre, O.B.E., D.L., and Mrs. Frances Anne Phayre,
of "Belgaum," Woking, Surrey. Killed 26 October 1914. Aged 24.
