Until recently there had been no War Memorial in Whitby where there could be central recognition of those who had lost their lives in war. In 2013 a memorial was built, funded by public subscription, in the dock area of the town. The memorial is close to the local Information Centre and opposite the town's railway station.

One of the (two) names mentioned on the memorial is that of Corporal Damian Lawrence of the 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment (the Green Howards) who was killed in Afghanistan in 2008.
