At an exhibition by the U3A Wessington War Memorials Project at the Arts Centre Washington, 3 - 17 November 2012, the Usworth Colliery War Memorial was on display, on loan from the Top Club, Usworth (the Usworth and District Workmens Club and Institute Ltd).

Of the 66 names on the memorial, 4 of the names on the memorial are for men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


Private Michael Brown. 16662. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Michael and Anne Brown; husband of M. A. Brown, of 3, Dorcas Terrace, Council Houses, Usworth, Washington, Co. Durham. Killed 22 August 1915. Aged 36
Born Usworth, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided New Washington.
Commemorated Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Lance Corporal Joseph Lightburn. 14993. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 5 October 1916.
Born Maryport, Enlisted Shiney Row, Resided Usworth.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Corporal James Henry Maughan. 16815. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Mary Ellen Maughan, of 13, Single Row, Usworth Colliery, Co. Durham; husband of Elizabeth Ann Hodgson (formerly Maughan), of 18, Todd's Buildings, Washington Village, Co. Durham. Died 5 October 1917. Aged 28.
Born Usworth (Co. Durham), Enlisted Washington, Resided Usworth.
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Private John Wilson. 16988. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 12 May 1918.
Born Sunderland, Enlisted Gateshead, Resided Usworth Colliery.
Buried PHALEMPIN COMMUNAL CEMTERY.
