At an exhibition by the U3A Wessington War Memorials Project at the Arts Centre Washington, 3 - 17 November 2012, a display board (photo above) provided a list of all the names on the Usworth (Holy Trinity) Church War Memorial.

The North East War Memorials Project provides further information on the memorial in the church itself.

Of the 119 names on the memorial for the First World War, 9 of the names on the memorial are for men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


Private Michael Brown. 16662. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Michael and Anne Brown; husband of M. A. Brown, of 3, Dorcas Terrace, Council Houses, Usworth, Washington, Co. Durham. Killed 22 August 1915. Aged 36
Born Usworth, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided New Washington.
Commemorated Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Lance Corporal Joseph Lightburn. 14993. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 5 October 1916.
Born Maryport, Enlisted Shiney Row, Resided Usworth.

Corporal James Henry Maughan. 16815. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Mary Ellen Maughan, of 13, Single Row, Usworth Colliery, Co. Durham; husband of Elizabeth Ann Hodgson (formerly Maughan), of 18, Todd's Buildings, Washington Village, Co. Durham. Died 5 October 1917. Aged 28.
Born Usworth (Co. Durham), Enlisted Washington, Resided Usworth.

Private James Henry Nesbitt, 45818. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 9 October 1917.

Corporal William Knox Roper. 14001. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Frederick Arthur Knox Roper and Maggie Knox Roper; husband of C. K. Roper, of 24, Pump Row, Waterloo, Usworth Colliery, Co. Durham. Died 5 July 1916. Aged 23.
Born Sedgfield (Durham), Enlisted Washington, Resided Usworth (Durham).
Buried ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private John Henry Simpson, 16229. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 9 April 1917.
Born West Boldon, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Usworth.

Private Henry Tait. 15682. 10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Margaret Ritson, of 19, New Rows North, New Washington, Co. Durham. Native of Usworth Colliery, Co. Durham. Killed 6 October 1917. Aged 34.
Born Usworth (Co. Durham), Enlisted Washington, Resided Usworth.
Buried GODEWAERSVELDE BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private John William Williams, 18877. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Ann and the late Matthew Williams; husband of Alice Levitt (formerly Williams), of 5, Wynyard St., Dawdon, Seaham Harbour. Died at home 6 July 1917. Aged 38.
Born Usworth, Enlisted Seaham Harbour.
