The War Memorial in St. Philip & St. James' Church, Tow
Law, is on the South wall to the left of the choir stalls.
14 names are to be found on this memorial, and the image above should be adequate
for transcription (the two names where the flash is strongest are Private
Percy Ellison of the Machine Gun Corps, and Private James Harle of the Northumberland
Fusiliers). The main memorial in the town centre has very many more names,
so it must be assumed that the majority of the men from Tow Law who lost their
lives in the First World War were "Chapel" as opposed to "Church".
One Officer of the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the above memorial.
Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Hedley Charlton, MC. 4th
Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late William Charlton and of Frances
Elizabeth Charlton, J.P., of The West Garth, Guisborough, Yorks; husband of
Mrs. D. F. Money (formerly Charlton), of 79, Wodeland Avenue, Guildford. Killed
22 March 1918. Aged 32.
Buried ROISEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Lieutenant Colonel Charlton was Manager of the Hedley Hope Colliery before
joining the Yorkshire Regiment.
The original simple wooden grave marker for Lieutenant Colonel Charlton, provided by the Imperial War Graves Commission, used to be hung in the church, but in March 2012 was transferred to the Green Howards Museum in Richmond where it can now be seen.
