There are three War Memorials in All Saints' Church, Thirkleby.
1. A metal plaque commemorating 6 men who lost their lives in the First World War.
2. A Roll of Honour commemorating both those who served and those who lost their lives in the First World War, - though those who died are not marked as such.
3. A wooden plaque commemorating those who died, as well as those who served, in the Second World War.

Although he is not shown on the metal plaque, one soldier of the Yorkshire Regiment who was killed in the First World War IS shown on the Roll of Honour, - together with four other Yorkshire Regiment soldiers who survived.

Private Samuel Apps, MM, 20398. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Samuel and Mary Jane Apps. Killed 17 September 1916. Aged 17.
Born Goudhurst (Kent), Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Goudhurst (Kent).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has researched Samuel Apps to find that:-
In the 1901 Census his father Samuel, aged 39, was a farm bailiff. Born Plymouth. His mother was Mary Jane, aged 33, born in Goudhurst.
He had 6 brothers and sisters.
His mother died in September 1904 and his father in June 1906.
In the 1911 Census, Samuel Apps is found as an inmate at the Gorden Boys Home, Morland Road in Croydon.
Samuel Apps' connection with Thirkleby is unknown, and it can only be surmised that he was employed at nearby Thirkleby Hall in some capacity at the time that war was declared.

His award of the Military Medal was published on 10 August 1916, - a remarkable award for an under-age soldier.
