The first rest camps for Commonwealth forces were established near Terlincthun in August 1914 and during the whole of the First World War, Boulogne and Wimereux housed numerous hospitals and other medical establishments.

The cemetery at Terlincthun was begun in June 1918 when the space available for service burials in the civil cemeteries of Boulogne and Wimereux was exhausted. It was used chiefly for burials from the base hospitals, but Plot IV Row C contains the graves of 46 RAF personnel killed at Marquise in September 1918 in a bombing raid by German aircraft.

In July 1920, the cemetery contained more than 3,300 burials, but for many years Terlincthun remained an 'open' cemetery and graves continued to be brought into it from isolated sites and other burials grounds throughout France where maintenance could not be assured.

During the Second World War, there was heavy fighting in the area in 1940. Wimille was devastated when, from 22 - 25 May, the garrison at Boulogne fought a spirited delaying action covering the withdrawal to Dunkirk. There was some fighting in Wimille again in 1944. The cemetery suffered considerable damage both from the shelling in 1940 and during the German occupation.

The cemetery now contains 4,378 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and more than 200 war graves of other nationalities, most of them German. Second World War burials number 149.

14 soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment are buried in this cemetery. One headstone is for an unknown Company Serjeant Major of the Yorkshire Regiment.

Private Henry Dobson. 21029.
13th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Died 21 November 1918.

Richard Roberts, <richard.nsw@googlemail.com>, has researched the above soldier and provides the following information;-
"Pte 21029 H Dobson 13th Battalion is Henry Dobson. Using pension records I found out that he married Florence Hannah Straker, and from Free BMD that this was in the Mar Qtr 1913 in the Middlesbrough RD. They had two children, Charles Henry and Mary Jane. In the 1911 Census, Florence born in 1894, is living with her parents in Ormesby. Although Henry Dobson is a relatively common name, only one turns up in the 1911 Census born and bred in Middlesbrough of an age likely to be considered for service in WW1 and he, like Florence, was born in 1894, the son of William a widower.
I am sure in my own mind that this Henry Dobson is the soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment."

His link with the Yorkshire Regiment is somewhat tenuous, and the Service Number on his headstone does not match the numbers in his Service Record.

The photo of this headstone was taken in November 2014.
As can be seen, the headstone was quite weathered at the time.
Chris Weekes happened to visit this cemetery in April 2018, and noticed that the headstone had been replaced with a new one.
Chris observed;-
"There have been some replacement stones because of the salt water air wearing away the original stones. One of these very new one was that for Lt Marlowe.
These new stones are of Italian marble, but apparently the CWGC is going back to using Portland stone as they have found another seam."
