The First World War Memorial in Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland The First World War Memorial in Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland

Holy Trinity Church, in East Sunderland, was opened in 1719 as the church for the newly created Parish of Sunderland. It is one of the oldest buildings in this part of the City of Sunderland. Once at the heart of the community centred on the port, the church was closed in 1988 because of a dwindling congregation and the need for expensive repairs. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and is a Grade I listed building.

The First World War Memorial is a painted wooden board that commemorates 225 soldiers who gave their lives in the First World War. 21 of these were former residents of the Sunderland Orphan Asylum which had close ties to the church.
