Outside St. Matthew's Church, Carver Street, Sheffield, to the left of the main door, is metal plaque commemorating 88 names of men who lost their lives in the First World War. 18 names were commemorated on the plaque as having been regular worshippers at the church. A further 70 names are commemorated as having been parishioners or having had a connection with the church.
3 soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment is are commemorated as having been parishioners of this church.
Private Maurice Palmer. 7534. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 15 June 1915.
Born Sheffield, Enlisted Sheffield.
Commemorated on Panel 12, LE TOURET MEMORIAL.
Private Ernest Rodwell. 3/7432. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 5 April 1918.
Born Pitsmoor (Sheffield), Enlisted Sheffield.
Buried ROYE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY.
(Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) comments that in the
CWGC register, the only "E Rodwell" name shown is that of the above
soldier. He was born in Pitsmoor (Sheffield) and in the 1911 Census was living
with his parents, Edwin and Kate, and 6 siblings at 69 Harvest Lane, Sheffield.
Harvest Lane is a short distance away to the North of Carver Street.)
Lance Corporal John William Tyas. 3/7510. 2nd Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Annie Lavina Tyas, of 6, Johnson St., Wicker,
Sheffield. Killed 12 March 1915. Aged 23.
Born Sheffield, Enlisted Sheffield.
