Inside St. John's Church, Park Hill, Sheffield, is a three-panelled board which commemorates the names of 140 persons who lost their lives in the First World War, and 19 in the Second World War.

Outside the church is a War Memorial in the form of a simple cross which carries no names, but the dedication commemorates those whose names are recorded on the memorial inside the church.

The memorial in the church includes the names of 9 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment (though one name appears to have been entered twice).


Private Harry Brookes, 8684. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 19 September 1916.
Born Ecclesfield (Sheffield), Enlisted Sheffield.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Percy Carr, 14556. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Ellen Carr, of 3, School St., Park, Sheffield. Killed 15 October 1917. Aged 26.
Born Sheffield, Enlisted Sheffield.
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Serjeant Charles Carter. 6695. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Beatrice Carter, of 7 Court, 4 House, St. John's Rd., Park, Sheffield. Killed 3 July 1916. Aged 34.
Born Attercliffe (Sheffield), Enlisted Sheffield.

Private Alfred Cox. 15888. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 9 August 1917.
Born Barnsley, Enlisted Sheffield.

Private Edmund Ashley Gray. 3/7496. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 24 January 1915. Aged 20.

Corporal Fred Marsden, DCM MM. 19015. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 19643 K O Y L I. Son of Mrs. Fanny Morton, of 244, Effingham Rd., Sheffield. Killed 18 September 1917. Aged 24.
Born Sheffield, Enlisted Sheffield.
Buried SUNKEN ROAD CEMETERY, FAMPOUX.

Private Harry Poole, 8534. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. A. Poole, of 9, Bernard St., Park, Sheffield. Killed 9 December 1916. Aged 22.
Buried CAVILLON COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
(Not shown in SDGW, but from 1911 Census data was born and resided in Sheffield).
Harry Poole is simply recorded as having deserted in the book "Shot at Dawn". No further details are given.

Private Harry Price. 10490. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Harry and Ellen Price, of "New Inn", 183, Duke St., Park, Sheffield. Killed 26 September 1915. Aged 19.

Commemorated on Panels 44 & 45, LOOS MEMORIAL.

Lance Corporal Joseph Sullivan. 34736. 12th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly TR/5/2930 1st T R Battn. Son of Mrs. E. Sullivan, of 12, Reuben Place, Park, Sheffield. Killed 11 April 1916. Aged 19.
Enlisted Sheffield.
