The War Memorial in Romanby, near Northallerton, is in the form of a clock tower. Memorial panels are on three sides of the tower.
On the front of the tower is a panel dedicating the memorial to the men who fell in the First World War, together with a panel of names of 8 men who lost their lives in the Second World War. On the left and right faces are two panels with the names of 14 men who lost their lives in the First World War. However, one of these names is that of two different soldiers, though with the same name, from Northallerton.

Of those commemorated, 7 are for men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


Corporal George Chapman, 67. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Alice Chapman, of Northallerton; husband of Elsie Chapman, of "West View," Romanby, Northallerton. Killed 2 May 1915. Aged 24.
Born Northallerton, Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Romanby.
Commemorated Panel 33, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Private Henry Holmes, 8029. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 12 March 1915.
Born Northallerton, Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Northallerton.

Private Lloyd Jones. 34181. 8th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 26242 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 17 January 1917.
Born Liverpool, Enlisted Northallerton (Yorks).

CQMS Harold Senior, 260120. 6th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, formerly 726 Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Susanna Senior, of 40, Fountain St., Guisborough; husband of Maud Senior, of Orchard House, Romanby, Northallerton, Yorks. Killed 18 October 1918. Aged 31.
Born Brotton (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton (Yorks).
Buried VADENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, MAISSEMY.

Private Harry Waines, 311607. Royal Garrison Artillery, formerly 1420 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 4 October 1917. Aged 25.
Born Bridlington (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton.
Commemorated Panel 6 to 7 and 162, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Note from Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>);-
"At birth he was registered as Moses Henry (Harry) Waines in Bridlington RD March 1892. His father was George Henry Waines and his mother Elizabeth. He married Sarah Margaret Smith in January 1914 and at the time of his death he had two young children."

Private Sydney James Weighell. 201296. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary E. Weighell, of Collie Post Office, Collie, Western Australia, and the late Isaac Weighell. Born at Northallerton, Yorks. Killed 20 November 1918. Aged 21.
Enlisted Northallerton.
