The War Memorial in Ripon's Spa Gardens
The War Memorial in Ripon's Spa Gardens

The War Memorial in Ripon's Spa Gardens is in the form of a column, with the sculpture of the head of a First World War soldier on its top. The base carries the names of the dead of both the First and Second World Wars on each of the four sides.
The Memorial is inscribed;-
"IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF RIPON MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 AND THE WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945."

Born Ripon (Yorks), Enlisted Ripon.

2nd Lieutenant William Thomas Cole. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Philip and Annie Cole, of 2, Blossomgate, Ripon, Yorks. Killed 29 July 1918. Aged 23.
Buried CHAMBRECY BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Arthur Wilkinson Ellerker. 203161. 1st/4th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 4157 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary H. Ellerker, of North St., Ripon, Yorks. Killed 14 April 1918. Aged 23.
Enlisted Ripon (Yorks).

Private Thomas Granville Fox. 45188. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 October 1917.
Born Ottrington (Yorks), Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Ripon.

Private Joseph Harrison. 28922. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Mary Harrison, of 87, Stonebridgegate, Ripon, Yorks. Killed 13 May 1917. Aged 25.

Private Henry Knowles. 24177. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Ellen Knowles, of Pateley Bridge, Yorks. Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 20.

Born High Morcas (Ripon), Enlisted Ripon, Resided Fountains (Ripon).

Private H McLoughlin. 2398. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, transf. to (256137) 408th Agricultural Coy. Labour Corps. Son of W. B. and Edith McLoughlin, of 6, Brewster Terrace, Ripon. Died at home 7 December 1918. Aged 23.
Buried RIPON CEMETERY.

Private Frederick Charles Metcalfe. 22594. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 23 April 1918.
Born Liverpool, Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided Thornaby-on-Tees.
Buried LEUZE COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
(No obvious connection with Ripon, but the only "F C" or "F G" Metcalfe that fits).

Private John William Pratt. 26724. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Sadler and Elizabeth Pratt, of Newton-on-Ouse, York. Died 22 September 1916. Aged 29.
Born Newton-on-Ouse (Yorks), Enlisted Haxby (Yorks).
Buried DARTMOOR CEMETERY, BECORDEL-BECOURT.
(no obvious connection with Ripon, but is the only "J W Pratt" listed that could possibly be the one)

Private Thomas Matthew Smithson. 2929. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John Mathew and Isabel Smithson, of 12, Newby St., Ripon, Yorks. Killed 7 July 1916. Aged 20.
Born Ripon, Enlisted Ripon.
Buried LA LAITERIE MILITARY CEMETERY.

Lance Corporal George Henry Ward. 3299. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 18616 Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Mary Ward, of 14, Cemetery Rd., Doncaster. Killed 21 April 1917. Aged 27.
Born Ripon (Yorks), Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Ripon.
Buried FEUCHY CHAPEL BRITISH CEMETERY, WANCOURT.

Corporal Arthur Eddy Winsor. 3/9650. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late F. and H. Winsor, of Brotton, Yorks; brother of Ivy Eveline Winsor, of 15, North St., Ripon, Yorks. Killed 4 April 1917. Aged 19.
Born Brotton (Yorks), Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Ripon.
Buried WARLINCOURT HALTE BRITISH CEMETERY, SAULTY.
