The Friary Gardens War Memorial is located, as the name suggests, in Richmond's Friary Gardens. This Memorial commemorates the dead of the two World Wars from the town of Richmond, North Yorkshire. The memorial is not specifically for the Green Howards, unlike the Gallowgate Memorial.

Company Serjeant Major John Henry Metcalfe. 3/8473. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late John Metcalfe, of Bedale; husband of Emma Metcalfe, of 6, West Powlett St., Darlington. Served in the South African Campaign with the Coldstream Guards. Killed 21 August 1915.
Born Crakehall (Bedale, Yorks), Enlisted Richmond, Resided Darlington.

Captain Robert Henry Murray.
11th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 July 1916. Aged 22.
Buried PHILOSOPHE BRITISH CEMETERY.
(Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has researched some of Captain Murray's background and states that he was the son of Robert & Sarah Annie Murray. Born 1894 in Richmond, Yorkshire and resided there.
Interactive Ancestry gives Captain Murray's address as "West Cottage", Richmond, and states that at the time of his death he was attached to the Munster Fusiliers.
Captain Murray's service with the Munster Fusliers is also quoted in Soldiers Died in the Great War.)
Robert Henry Murray had been a student at Selwyn College, Cambridge University, entering the college in 1913.

"I researched the birth of Charles Percy Tempest in FreeBMD, and he was registered as in the September quarter of 1900. This means he could have been born after 1 July 1900, and could therefore have been younger than 16 when he was killed.")
Frank Little (<frlittle@xs4all.nl>) also commented;-
"According to my own family research, Charles Percy Tempest was born on 27 May 1900, this being the date of birth given in his school record at the Richmond Church of England School. He was admitted there on 3 May 1909 and left “of age” on 12 June 1914.
He was the second son of Thomas Tempest, papermaker of Richmond, North Riding of Yorkshire, and Emily Annie [née Little] of Barnard Castle.
However, unless the school admission date is wrong, he was indeed 16 years of age when he died on 1 July 1916."
