On the third row from the front, second from the left, the soldier has been identified as William Stevenson (b 3/10/1881, d 22/5/1950) from Middlesbrough.

Enlisted on 22/3/1905 and entered Belgium on 15/10/14 with the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Sent back to England he became Sergeant Major of 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and was discharged on 3/8/16 due to wounds.

James Hurson was later killed serving with the 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.

Note the RQMS at the right rear still wears the pre-war Star and 4 cheverons badge of rank.
Also, all three in uniform wear the medal ribbons of the Boer War. Indeed the lad left rear must have at least four because we can’t see two because of the sling.

On the left F Elridge with the drummers arm badge describes himself as “Bugler”,
and one other, Tom Young, have signed the card. The other two are unnamed.

Resided 1 Sidegate Durham City. Killed in Action 10 July 1916 at the Capture of Contalmaison.

Harry Inglis was the No 2 on the Lewis Gun carried by Walter Sheen. They both lived in the same tenement and when Walter returned home he gave Mrs Inglis a Green Howards cap badge and told her that was all of Harry that was picked up, as he had been “blown to bits”. Of course today we know they were wearing steel helmets so it was Walter's way of dealing with a mothers grief.

Didn’t enter France until 1916. Commissioned 25/4/17 he rejoined the battalion and was taken prisoner during the German advance in 1918.

There was also a Lt Colonel Frederick Robson, DSO, of the 5th Battalion, who was killed on 29 March 1918.
