The New Shildon War Memorial is situated in Redworth Road, Shildon, having been relocated to that position from where it had previously stood in Shildon Cemetery. This War Memorial only includes names for the First World War.

There is a rather curious dedication on the memorial, - see photo below. The memorial also records the death by drowning of a child who was visiting his father on service in France. Further details of this can be found on the North East War Memorials Project page.

There are 124 names of the dead of the First World War. Of these names 2 are for soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment. Details of soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment can be found below.

Unfortunately, two of the three sides on the memorial base, on which all names are inscribed have become close to being illegible due to weathering and lichen growth. Photos of all three sides on which names appear are shown below. However, we are fortunate in that the North East War Memorials Project page includes transcriptions of the names from a time when they were somewhat more legible.

Private Ralph Bainbridge. 6257. 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers attd. 29th Trench Mortar Bty., formerly 15931 Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Mrs. M. Cummins, of 25, Soho St., New Shildon, Co. Durham. Killed 3 December 1917. Aged 30.
Born New Shildon, Enlisted Stokesley, Resided New Shildon (Co. Durham).
Commemorated Panel 45, JERUSALEM MEMORIAL.

Private Thomas William Robson. 38716. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Stainthorpe, of 10, Regent St., New Shildon, Co. Durham. Killed 25 June 1917. Aged 28.
Born Shildon (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided New Shildon.
Buried DICKEBUSCH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY EXTENSION.
