Private Thomas Richardson. 18091.

The following biographical notes have been provided by Bill Richardson (<wpr3145@gmail.com>), a descendant of Thomas Richardson;-

The parents of Thomas Richardson were Goerge William Richardson (born in Usworth in 1860) and Hannah (nee Robson) (born in Quarrington Hill in 1865).

Thomas was born in the 3rd quarter of 1894.
From census records, his birthplace was Shotten Colliery.

In 1901, the family were living at 6 South Crescent, Cold Hesledon. Thomas is shown with three sisters (Ann, Isabella, Margaret). He had two brothers (Robert and baby George). Another sister Mary Ann was not with the family and a baby sister,
Elizabeth, was born late in 1901.

On 30th June 1907, Thomas's father died. The family lived at 8 Hesledon Terrace, Cold Heseldon.
The burial took place on 3rd July 1907 at Murton Holy Trinity.

As was normal in those days, Thomas's mother remarried. She married Robert Cook, who was some years older, in 1909.

The 1911 census, shows Robert and Hannah Cook with five of her children (Thomas, Isabella, Maggie, George and Lizzie) living at 6 St Andrews Terrace.
By 1911, the eldest daughter, Mary Ann, was married to John Jobling. The second daughter Annie was also married. Her husband was George Hunter and, as well as two children, Annie's brother Robert was a lodger.

In 1913, Thomas got married at Murton Holy Trinity.
The record shows the date as 20 Dec 1913 Thomas Richardson (bachelor, miner), age 20, of Dalton-le-Dale, son of George Richardson (miner) married Hannah Miller (spinster), age 19, of Dalton-le-Dale, daughter of Moses Miller (miner)
Witnesses: Samuel Charleton, Ellen Jennings

On 16th August 1914, thanks to his wife, Thomas became a father. Baby Hannah was born at 11 d'Arcy Place. Exactly two weeks later,
Hannah was baptised in the church where her parents had been married.

War broke out and Thomas joined the Yorkshire Regiment.
