(*) Although there was a George Webb in the Yorkshire Regiment who came from Middlesbrough, research by W C Mellors (email address as above) has shown that the George Webb on the Middridge War Memorial served in the Royal Field Artillery.
Corporal George Webb of the RFA was killed on 19 of October 1917 and was buried in Dochy Farm New British Cemetery at Langemark, West Flanders, Belgium.


Private Jonathan Chalder Hutchinson, 17868. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 29.
Born Amble (Northumberland), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Middridge (New Shildon).
Buried FRICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Joseph Rowlands, 35435. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 15568 R F A. Killed 11 April 1918.
Born Eldon (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Coundon Grange (Co. Durham).
Commemorated Panel 4, Ploegsteert Memorial.

Lance Corporal George Shaw Williams. 39098. 32nd Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 18761 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 28 September 1916.
Born Hanley (Staffs), Enlisted Durham.
Commemorated Pier and Face 5 C and 12 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Ivor Davies (<iandjdavies@blueyonder.co.uk>) has researched the military history of Lance Corporal George Shaw Williams, and has provided a most comprehensive and interesting account of his service. Lance Corporal Williams was initially with the North Staffordshire Regiment, serving with them in the Boer War. In the First World War he joined the Yorkshire Regiment and served with the 6th Battalion at Gallipoli. He survived this, and joined the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed serving with the MGC.
