The War Memorial for Masham is a cross outside St. Mary's Church,
with an octagonal base on which are carved the names of those who died in both
the First and Second World Wars. Included in the names are two people who were
killed in enemy bombing of Masham in the Second World War.
The panels on the base carry the following dedication for those who died in
the First World War;-
IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH
WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918.
"THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE"

Lance Corporal George Hick Brown, 40495. 8th Battalion North Staffordshire
Regiment, formerly 3021 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. R. L. and Mrs.
J. Brown, of Park St., Masham, Ripon, Yorks. Killed 6 August 1917. Aged 19.
Born Hackness (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton (Yorks), Resided Masham (Yorks).
Buried BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (NORD).
Private Herbert Foster Bruce, 5445. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Charles Fenwick Bruce and Elizabeth Bruce, of "Silverdale",
Masham, Ripon, Yorks. Killed 17 September 1916. Aged 19.
Born Masham (Yorks), Enlisted South Shields.

Hill, Masham, Ripon, Yorks. Killed 4 August 1915. Aged 21.

Private James Cole, 12824. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed
1 July 1916.
Born Croydon (Surrey), Enlisted Masham, Resided Croydon.

Sergeant George Duffield, 12791. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of John and Emmeline Duffield, of Masham, Yorks. Killed 31 December 1915.
Aged 21.

Buried BRANDHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.

= 12793).
(*) Private Herbert William Mood, 5274. Yorkshire Regiment, transferred
to the Labour Corps. Step-son of Mrs. Minna Mood, of Market Place, Masham.
Died 28 November 1918. Aged 32.

Buried DURY CRUCIFIX CEMETERY.
Private George Spence, 28235. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed 17 October 1917.

Private Arthur Leslie Timms, 242713. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of George Timms, of Cross Hill, Masham, Yorks. Killed 20 September 1917.
Aged 21.
Born Ellington (Yorks), Enlisted Masham.
Buried YPRES RESERVOIR CEMETERY.
Private Timms is also commemorated on a family headstone
in St. Mary's Churchyard, Masham.

Killed 22 December 1917.

Private Bertram Woodward, 4555. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Mrs. C. Miller, of "Sunnyside," 58, Borobridge Rd., Knaresborough,
Yorks. Killed 17 September 1916. Aged 38.
Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Masham.

Martin Briscoe, of Fort William (<mbriscoe@zetnet.co.uk>) has written supplying information on the Mood family. Martin is related to Thomas Mood's first wife (Thomas Mood was the father of Raymond Mood, above).
Thomas Mood had 5 sons and 5 daughters, two of the sons by his first wife, Margaret, and three by his second wife Minna. Of these sons, Herbert William, Raymond were killed in the First World War. Percival Mood (1917, see above) son of William and Minna, was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and was killed on 11 November 1917, aged 23.
