The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L & YR) was a major British railway company before the 1923 Grouping. It was incorporated in 1847 from an amalgamation of several existing railways. It was the third-largest railway system based in Northern England (after the Midland and North Eastern Railways).

In the First World War, from over 40,000 employees of the L & YR 10,422 joined the Armed Forces (27%). Of these men, 1,465 lost their lives and are commemorated on the memorial in Manchester's Victoria Railway Station. The memorial consists of seven panels with names, set below a tiled map of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway network. Relief panels at each end of the name panels depict (left) St. Michael with his foot on the neck of the fallen Satan, and (right) St. George slaying the dragon.

Two Rolls of Honour were printed by the L & YR. One Roll of Honour published in 1915 included a list those who had enlisted in the Armed Forces, with the regiments they had enlisted in. The other Roll of Honour, printed in 1919, lists those who lost their lives, - but by name and initials only. These Rolls of Honour can be found on the website for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Society.

By comparing the names in the 1919 Roll of Honour with the names in the Yorkshire Regiment Remembrance website database, taking into account the geographical areas in which the latter names were born / enlisted / resided, 47 names were found who could have been employees of the L & YR as well as having served in the Yorkshire Regiment. Of these 47 names, only six can be said with any degree of certainty as to having been both L & YR employees and Yorkshire Regiment soldiers (by comparison with the 1915 Roll of Honour and the 1911 Census).

The names of all 45 men of the Yorkshire Regiment whose names are found on the War Memorial for the L & YR in Manchester's Victoria Station are shown below. Details of the 41 names where it is not certain as to whether they were employees of the L & YR, or not, are shown in italics.

We are extremely grateful to Mike Berrell (<mike_berrell@ntlworld.com>) for the photographs of this memorial that are on this page of the website.
However, our attention has been drawn to a set of photo of this memorial, where all on the individual panels have been photographed by Lawrence Holmes. You may wish to view this set of photos as well.
