The First World War Memorial in Leeds' Minster Church (formerly
St. Peter's Church, Leeds) is a marble plaque on which are commemorated the
names of 76 men from Leeds who lost their lives in the First World War. According
to the Imperial
War Museum's register of War Memorials, the memorial fell off the wall
on which it was mounted and broke in two. The memorial was repaired in 2000.
Amongst the names commemorated are two soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment.
One of these names (Private P J Clynes) is shown as having served in the West
Yorkshire Regiment. The other name, Private Thomas Craven, is very likely
to be the soldier from the Yorkshire Regiment, although there is no certainty
on this.
Private John Clynes. 25448. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of John and Mary Alice Clynes, of 58, Richmond Rd. East, Leeds,
Yorks. Killed 21 March 1918. Aged 21.
Born Leeds, Enlisted Leeds.
Buried CANADA FARM CEMETERY.
Private Thomas Henry Watson Craven. 7754. 2nd Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas Henry and Margaret Craven, of 11, Martha
St., Salford, Manchester; husband of Rose Hettie Utley (formerly Craven),
of 54, Canning St., Hunslet, Leeds. Killed 30 October 1914. Aged 28.
Born Leeds, Enlisted Leeds, Resided Holbeck (Leeds).
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
(According to the 1911 Census, Thomas Henry Watson Craven was born in 1881.
He would thus have been 33 when killed.)
