The Church of the Holy Barn, Laithkirk, is in a small hamlet just outside Middleton-in-Teesdale. Although the church is thought to have been established in the 16th Century, the present building dates from the mid-19th Century.

12 names are commemorated on the War Memorial inside the church, 4 of whom served in the Yorkshire Regiment. One of the other names is that of the brother of the Queen Mother, H M Queen Elizabeth.

Private James Foster. 24742. 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), formerly 24521 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 13 November 1918.
Enlisted Barnard Castle (Yorks), Resided Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Private William Maurice Jackson. 24407. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late William and Eliza Jackson, of Station Rd., Mickleton, Darlington. Killed 10 July 1916. Aged 21.
Born Mickleton (Yorks), Enlisted Barnard Castle, Resided Mickleton (Yorks).
Buried GORDON DUMP CEMETERY.
(Shown on the Laithkirk War Memorial as Maurice W Jackson, but the CWGC and SDGW and Green Howards Gazette database shows him as "William Maurice".)

Private John William Morton. G/27470. 2nd/4th Battalion Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), formerly 26532 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 4 November 1917.
Born Mickleton (York), Enlisted Barnard Castle (York).
Commemorated on the JERUSALEM MEMORIAL.

Private John James Smith, 26760. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 October 1916. Aged 19.
Born Middleton (Yorks), Enlisted Stratforth, Resided Holwick (Middleton-in-Teesdale).
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.


Captain the Hon. Fergus Bowes-Lyon. 8th Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). Son of 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, of Glamis Castle, Forfarshire; husband of Lady Christian Bowes-Lyon (now Lady Christian Martin). Educated at Eton. Previously served with 2nd Bn. in India. (Queen Mother's brother). Killed 27 September 1915. Aged 26.
