St. Michael and All Angels church, Howick, is a pleasant early Victorian building situated inside the grounds to the south-east of Howick Hall.

The memorial commemorating the men of Howick who lost their lives in the First World War is a stone plaque located to the right of the main entrance to the church.

The names of those who appear on this memorial are;-

James Clough, Private 10th Yorkshire Regiment (36) **see note 1 **
Joseph Moon, Private 9th Yorkshire Regiment (27)

Notes

1 : "James Clough" appears to be "James Henry Cleugh" (in the CWGC register) / "James Henry Cleng" in SDGW. He is shown as James Henry Clough in the Medal Rolls Index, formerly in the 10th Yorkshires.

2 : "Joseph Moon" appears to be "Arthur Moon", - the son of Joseph and Emma Moon. His age on the memorial is shown as being 27, but from records he was born in Q4 1886. Therefore aged 29.


Private James Henry Cleugh, 53169. 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 204673 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 24 April 1918. Aged 36.
Born Rock (Northumberland), Enlisted Consett (Durham).
Commemorated Panel 26 and 27, POZIERES MEMORIAL.

Private Arthur Moon
. 19824. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 10364 Northumberland Fusiliers. Son of Joseph and Emma Moon, of Canterbury, Kent. Killed 19 September 1916. Aged 29.
Born Canterbury, Enlisted Alnwick.
Buried ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT.
