The War Memorial on Hartlepool's Headland is in the form of a column, surmounted by a statue of a bronze winged figure, - "Triumphant Youth". The column is in the centre of Memorial Gardens.

The names of those commemorated are on 5 plaques set in the wall on the outside of the gardens, - overlooking the sea. Four of the plaques commemorate the soldiers, and sailors from Hartlepool who lost their lives in the First World War.
The 5th plaque (on the right) commemorates the men, women amd children who lost their lives in the bombardment of Hartlepool (from the sea) on 16th December 1914.
