The Grindleford, Derbyshire, War Memorial is situated is on the Village Green in the old centre of the Village next to the Methodist Chapel. There are 16 names from WW1 commemorated on it including one soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment. 12 names on the memorial are for the Second World War.

The names on the memorial have been researched by Richard Clarke on the Derbyshire War Memorials website and photographs are by Chris Preston. We are very grateful to Richard Clarke and Chris Preston for use of the information and photos.

The Yorkshire Regiment soldier commemorated on the Grindleford Memorial is also commemorated on a family headstone in St. Helen's Churchyard, Grindleford, together with his two sons who died on active service in the Second World War.


Private Frank Pennock. 34469. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 204890 York & Lancs Regt. Killed 15 November 1917.
Born Sheffield, Enlisted Sheffield.
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Frank Pennock was married to Ethel and had two sons, both of whom served in WW2. Charles Eggington Pennock in the D.L.I. and Frank Leslie Pennock in the R.A.F. Both died on active service and are also commemorated on the memorial.

The Grindleford War Memorial puts Frank Pennock's date of death as being the 11 November 1917, whereas the CWGC and SDGW put the date as 15 November 1917.
