The Goole Cenotaph

The Goole Cenotaph is located in Bartholomew Gardens. Ths War Memorial is an 18-foot replica of the Cenotaph in London.

Three bronze panels mounted at the back and sides of the Cenotaph commemorate 459 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War.
Four bronze panels mounted at the base of the Cenotaph commemorate 252 names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War.
Transcriptions of the dedication on the Cenotaph and all of the names can be found on the GENUKI website.

10 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the Goole Cenotaph.

Born Goole, Enlisted Goole.

2nd Lieutenant John William Brown, MM.
10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, attached to 5th Battalion. Son of John and Rebecca Brown, of 151, Pasture Rd., Goole, Yorks. Killed 11 April 1918. Aged 30.

Private Albert Gillyon. 203232. 1st/4th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, formerly 3474 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Fred Keane Gillyon and Mary Ann Gillyon, of 44, Manuel St., Goole. Killed 25 July 1917. Aged 25.
Enlisted Bridlington.

Private Arthur Greensides. 43725. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 71153 87th T R Battn. Son of Charles and Anna Greensides, of 30, Henry St. Goole, Yorks. Killed 6 June 1918. Aged 18.
Born Goole, Enlisted Doncaster, Resided Goole.
Commemorated on the SOISSONS MEMORIAL.

Lance Corporal Ernest Hebdon, 24844. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 14 October 1917. (In SDGW = 13 May 1917).
Born Old Goole, Enlisted Goole, Resided Old Goole.
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Private Adam Joyner. 19004. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Martha Ann Nielson (formerly Joyner), of 9, Bk. Capstan St., Goole. Killed 21 April 1917. Aged 28.

Private Arnold Kime Needham. 19023. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 19535 K O Y L I. Son of Mrs. E. A. Needham, of 68, Manuel St., Goole, Yorks, and the late Mr. W. Needham. Born Barlborough, Derbyshire. Killed 10 December 1915. Aged 20.

Private Sidney Herbert Rutherford. 36213. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 21743 E Yorks Regt. Son of James William and Fanny Rutherford. Killed 2 April 1917. Aged 26.
Born Selby (Yorks), Enlisted York.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
(in the 1911 Census, Sidney Herbert Rutherford is living with his married brother and his wife at 23, Manuel Street, Goole. He os described as an "Assistant Railway Signalman.)

Born Goole, Enlisted Leeds, Resided Goole.

Private Frederick Thomas Thurston. 19062. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 19555 Yorks L I. Killed 8 February 1917.

Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Arthur Wakes. 19068. 11th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 19701 K O Y L I. Son of William and Anne Maria Wakes. Born at Goole. Died at home 26 January 1918. Aged 36.
