The Fricourt Memorial
(photo : Andy Morris <andymorris99@wanadoo.co.uk>)
We are grateful to Andy Morris, <andymorris99@wanadoo.co.uk>, for sending us this photo of the memorial to the men of the 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. The memorial commemorates the men of the 7th Battalion who were killed on 1 July 1916, or who subsequently died of their wounds, in the opening of the Battle of the Somme. The memorial is located inside the Fricourt British Cemetery, in which 92 men of the 7th Battalion are buried.

The base of the memorial is a square. On the face of the base
is inscribed;-
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN UNDYING MEMORY OFTHE OFFICERS, NON-COMMISSIONED
OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE 7TH BATTALION ALEXANDRA PRINCESS OF WALES' OWN YORKSHIRE
REGIMENT GREEN HOWARDS WHO FELL NEAR THIS PLACE 1st JULY 1916."
117 names of the above men of the 7th Battalion are recorded on
the other three faces of the square. 89 of the names refer to men buried in
the cemetery, and the other names refer to me who are buried elsewhere or who
have no known grave and are commemorated elsewhere. Note that the recording
of the names has been VERY inaccurate. There are very many errors in the names
as listed on the Memorial, and the errors have been listed below.
